Dougharty Family

Doughartys

William Dougharty was born in Ireland, the date of birth uncertain. There, the name was O’Dougharty. In Tanya Nauman’s account of the O’Doughartys, William immigrated from Ireland in 1759. According to Mary McCrury, a descendant of William O’Dougharty of Odessa, Texas, William came from Ireland as a conscript to fight against the colonies in the Revolutionary War. He deserted and stayed in America. Family lore says he had a brother who also deserted but returned to Ireland. after the War. Floyd and I found this bit of information. In 1762, William Dougharty’s name was on a passenger list of an unnamed ship arriving in Boston, Massachusetts. William Dougharty was married to Elizabeth McLelland who was also born in Ireland. The date of her birth is also unknown but their deaths occurred sometime after 1789 in Milledgeville, near Akin, South Carolina.

William and Elizabeth were married sometime before 1783. Their first child, James Dougharty was born January 1783 in Milledgeville, near Aiken, South Carolina. He died  November  10, 1842 in Adams Co., Mississippi. George Dougharty was born September 29, 1784 in Milledgeville near Akin, South Carolina. He died March 28, 1855 in Newton Co., Texas. Nancy Ann Dougharty was born August 17, 1885 in Charlston, South Carolina and died October 9, 1825 in Adams Co., Mississippi. William Y. Dougharty was born February 4. 1788 and died October 20, 1836 in Jersey Co., Illinois (Otter Creek Township).

After moving westward, to Adams Co., Mississippi, our direct ancestor, George Dougharty was married to Elizabeth  Sojourner on January 10, 1811 in Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi.

Her parents were John Sojourner and Sarah Unknown. Elizabeth  was born in October 1795 in Crab Orchard Kentucky and died about 1832 or 1834 in Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi. She was buried near a creek, on the Sojourner property  It seems the Sojourners, probably, were prominent citizens of the Kingston area of Adams Co., Mississippi. They owned a large plantation. Even now, (2004) the old home is a Bed and Breakfast, owned and operated by Sojourner descendants.

George and Elizabeth  were the parents of eight children.

 1. Emeline Eliza Dougharrty was born  1812 in Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi and died September 19, 1863 in Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi. Emeline was married to Thomas Carter on January 10, 1833.

2.  Ann Mary Dougharty was born February 12, 1814 in Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi and died September 19, 1863 in Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi. She was  buried in  the King/Farrar Cemetery. Ann Mary was married to Alexander King Farrar on December 2, 1835.

3.  Caroline Sarah Dougharty was born April 27, 1817 in Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi. She was married to James Bowman who was born May 10, 1798 in Sumter Dist., South Carolina. He was the son of Matthew Bowman a Circuit Riding Methodist Preacher. James also became a Methodist Preacher.

James and Caroline had four children:

1.  Thomas

2.  Thornton Hardie

3.  Eddwin

4.  Katie

James and Caroline moved across the river from Natchez and built a Louisiana plantation they called Alphenia. Not long after this a dark providence overshadowed Alphenia. Caroline and four of the children, some by a previous marriage of James’, were snatched away within a week by the cruel hand of death. Four motherless children and a broken-hearted father were left in sorrow; but not as those who sorrow without hope. The Bowman-Dougharty house was a house of prayer. Quoting from their son, Thornton Hardie, in his book “Reminiscenses of an ex-Confederate Soldier or “Forty Years on Crutches” we find the following:

I remember how my dying mother’s face was lighted by a blaze of glory. I remember too, how sweetly the little girls and boys met the dread messenger and how little Anna, at seven years of age, exhorted everybody to give their hearts to Jesus; how she sent for Mr. Harper, her Sunday school teacher, to thank him for showing her “the more excellent way,” and now with her last breath she said, “Tell cousin Lizzie I will be at the beautiful gate waiting and watching for her.”

I now continue the births of the other children of George and Elizabeth Sojourner Dougharty:

William Hardy Dougharty  born 1819

George Winan Dougharty born 1821

Martha Almira Dougharty born 1823 in Adams Co., Mississippi and died April 5, 1853 in Huntsville, Walker Co., Texas

James McLellan Dougharty born 1826, probably Adams Co., Mississippi and died between 1864 and 1869

Laura Eugenia Dougharty born

1828 Kingston, Adams Co., Mississippi and died after 1874

Thomas Dougharty born 1831 Probably Adams Co., Mississippi

George Dougharty was a surveyor by trade and plied that trade while living in the Natchez- Kingston, Mississippi area. We now know and have copies of some of the maps he drew in 1823 and 1831. His penmanship is extra-ordinarily beautiful so I’m convinced good penmanship may be hiereditary since my grandfather George Bowman Dougharty and my mother Arcadia Imelda Dougharty Boyett each had beautiful handwriting.

It was in Mississippi that Elizabeth died about 1832, leaving George a widower with eight children, some quite young. As usual, in those days, George soon found a young widow with two children so about two years after Elizabeth’s death on January 1, 1834 he married Courtney Ann Caraway Ford., the daughter of Adam Caraway and Sarah Alford Caraway.

George and Courtney moved westward to Texas in 1843, before the Civil War and settled in Newton which was at that time in Jasper County., Republic of Texas. When Texas organized as a State, in 1846, Jasper Co. was split with the eastern half becoming Newton Co. The first county clerk was George Dougharty. One of his assigned chores was, in addition to furnishing a table and chairs for the County Court, to marking the line between Newton and Jasper Counties.

George was twenty years older than Courtney. The 1850 Census showed George and Courtney had six children living in their household. They were:

Francis Bascomb Dougharty               Age  20

Hester Ann Ford                                  Age 18

Marshall Joseph Dougharty              Age 15

Amanda Catherine Dougharty             Age 13

Julia Cassandra Dougharty                Age 11

Charles Bowman Dougharty                Age  7

Courtney must have died soon after the census was taken, actually she died in 1853. On February 20, 1854, George took out a license to marry Harriet Poole Hall, widow of Britton “Britt” Hall. Harriet died very soon after their marriage.

In May of 1855, George, now 70 years of age, and his son Charles Bowman were hauling logs on an ox cart, near the “Wilson Woods place”. George had stopped to open a gate and was gored by one of the oxen. His eleven year old son, Charles Bowman, pulled enough logs from the wagon to cover his father and ran for help but  George was mortally wounded and there was nothing they could do.

The inventory of his estate included his surveying tools and maps, four boxes of books, including “Josephus and Cisero”. The maps bearing his signature, Geo. Dougharty is an example of the superior abilities of our ancestor, George Dougharty, for whom  my grandfather, George Bowman Dougharrty was named.

George also taught school, was a member of the State Legislature and a farmer.

After George’s tragic death, Joseph Marshall and Charles Bowman were found living with   their half sister, Hester Ann, who was married to Asa Lafitte Stark. The whereabouts of Amanda Catherine and Julia Cassandra at that time are unknown. They may have already been married.

Charles Bowman was later married to Nancy Matilda Stark, daughter of William Hawley Stark and Elizabeth Zachary. Their wedding took place on October 2, 1867, when he was 24 years of age and she was 17. They were married in Newton Co., Texas. Charles Bowman was born February 24, 1843 and Nancy Matilda was born April 8, 1850.

Charles and Nancy were the parents of seven children:

  1. James H. Dougharty b. October 15, 1868 in Newton Co., Texas and d. March 19,

1893.  He is buried in the small Dougharty Cemetery beside Caney Creek in Bon Wier, Texas.  He was married to Sabrey Ann Rutherford, but they had no children. After his death she and her brother John Rutherford lived together.

buried in the Davis Cemetery at Fawil.

He then married her cousin, Mary Viola “Mollie” Herrin daughter of Samuel Herrin and Mary Cochran, on November 10, 1909. Mary Viola was born October 9, 1883 in Newton Co., Texas and died in 1960. Although My Grandfather, George Bowman Dougharty was the second oldest child of Charles Bowman Dougharty and Nancy Matilda Stark, I have saved his family till last. Since Iam part of the family and know more about them, I may want to add some stories about them. I’ve already written that George Bowman married Maud “Maudy” Lewis. She had no brothers or sisters and was reared by her Lewis Grandparents, Asa and Sarah “Sab”  Page Lewis.  One census listed her as the adopted daughter of Asa and Sarah. We would like to know more about the circumstances but the door seems to be closed to us. George and Maud were the parents of   ten children:

Arcadia Imelda Dougharty born November 5, 1894 in Newton Co., Texas and died December 27, 1946 in Beaumont, Jefferson Co., Texas. She was married to George Peavy Boyett July 7, 1912 in Fawil, Newton Co., Texas. He was born March 16, 1884 in Newton Co., Texas to John Wesley Boyett and Henrietta Jones. He died in Beaumont, Jefferson Co., Texas, October 17, 1952, our daughter Juana’s tenth birthday. He had been living in our home for several years, since his health had declined after mother died. Both are buried in the Davis Cemetery at Fawil, Newton Co., Texas.

Charles Asa Dougharty born September 6, 1897 in Fawil, Newton Co., Texas and died December 2, 1977 in Newton, Texas.  He is buried in the Davis Cemetery at Fawil, Texas.

He was married to Sallie Love Smith. She was born in Newton Co., Texas and died in Bon Wier, Texas. She is buried at Lewis Chapel Cemetery.

Clara Viola Dougharty born March 8, 1898 in Newton Co., Texas and died May 1, 1995 in Jasper, Texas. She was married to William Benton Morgan, son of Ivan Morgan and Melissa Effaline Westbrook, on October 2, 1919 in Jasper Co., Texas. He was born November 27, 1885 in Jasper Co., Texas and died June 21, 1965 in a J. O. Stringer ambulance en route to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. His obituary says he died in Jefferson County. Benton and Clara are buried in the Magnolia Springs Cemetery in Jasper Co., Texas.

Georgia Mae Dougharty born November 19, 1900 in Newton Co., Texas and died May 1, 1944 in Newton Co., Texas. She was married to George Robert Stark, Son of Adam Lackey Stark and Frances Rutherford, (probably) October 2, 1919. He was born October 9, 1885 in Newton Co., Texas and died April 15, 1982 in Newton Co., Texas. Both are buried in the Ford Cemetery. At the time of Aunt Mae’s death, her son Travis Adam Stark was serving in World War 11 in England. Uncle Bob was reluctant to let him know how ill his mother was but I took the responsibility of getting the news to him and later received a thank you letter from him for letting him know his mother was going to die.

James William Dougharty  born May 11, 1904 and died December 16, 1971 in DeRidder, Louisiana. He is buried in the Davis Cemetery in Fawil, Texas. He was married first to Mary Herrin. Second wife was unknown Pollard.

We have been fortunate to learn much more about the very large Dougharty family and are finding them to be one of the most interesting of those we are researching. This year of 2004, we have connected with Dougharty descendants in the Naches-Kingston area of Mississippi. From them, we have received important information relative to the family and copies of documents and maps drawn by our common ancestor, George Dougharty. These newly acquired items are of great importance to the Dougharty family history. I now have framed copies of  George’s maps hanging in my entry hallway and I am proud to show them to visitors in my home, telling them these were done by my GG-grandfather Dougharty in the years of 1823and 1831. Very soon I hope to have them on my website so that others can view them and appreciate them as I now do.  GG-grandfather George was an intelligent and industrious man, a credit to all descendants and to any town or community in which he lived.

We are proud to have descended from such a great man. Because of him, we are who we are today. We will be forever indebted to him for paving the way for us and for helping to make

America, the great Country that it is today.

Notes for GEORGE W. DOUGHARTY:

By 1843 George and Courtney Ann were in Jasper Co., Republic of Texas. When Texas organized as a state in 1846, Jasper Co. was split with the eastern half becoming Newton Co. The first County Clerk in Newton County was George Dougharty. One of his assigned chores (in addition to furnishing a table and chairs for the County Court) was to mark the line between Jasper and Newton Counties.

Courtney died in 1853 and George married the widow Harriet Hall. She died in 1854. In May of 1855 George (age 72 by now) and his son, Charles Bowman, were hauling logs on an ox cart by "Wilson Wood's place". George had stopped  to open a gate and was gored by one of the oxen. His 11 year old son pulled enough logs from the wagon to cover George and ran for help. George died from this injury. The inventory of his estate included (besides his surveying tools and maps) four boxes of books, including "Josephus" and "Cicero". Examples of his surveying work show beautiful script and signature. The wife must have died soon after the census was taken, for on February 20, 1854, George took out a license to marry Harriet Hall, widow of Britt Meadows. Facts on George W. "The county government officials have varied in number and duties a little through history but they have stayed nearly the same. A very important office for history is the office of clerks.

The county clerk, whose term then was for two years, was clerk of the county and comissioners court, recorder of deeds, and custodian of county records. He also issued marriage licenses and recorded the completed certificates. GEORGE DOUGHARTY was our first county clerk, and the first marriage license he issued was to Thomas Wilson and Alla Jane Southern. The date was September 10, 1846.

On August 1, 1848, 500 acres on Sabine River sold to George Dougharty for State & County Taxes of $3.59.

Well, Clovis, I just learned somemore about the family from my cousin Grace. When my G-Grandfather died, the family had no money and he was buried in a "Potters Grave" in Maud, Oklahoma. Grace told this to me last night on the phone. She told me the story which related he came to Oklahoma with a herd of cattle which he sold at the Ardmore, Oklahoma rail yard. I had been told he left Texas with no money and when he got to Oklahoma he had a herd of cattle. Grace told me George and a cousin hired out to a rancher and joined a cattle drive to take the cattle to a railhead. When they arrived, they were paid and then sent for their families. It was very interesting talking to her. Well, I will talk to you later. “Happy hunting and good luck.” (Note from Clovis La Fleur, May 2000: I believe the cousin is Grace Rice, daughter of Effie Stark and Joe E. Rice and grand-daughter of George D. Stark.)

Note from Clovis La Fleur, Oct. 2000

The Newton County, Texas 1860 census list Geo. D. Stark as the son of S. H. Stark and his wife Julia. He is shown to be 9/12 years old. The census was taken in June 1860 placing his birth in 1859, probably in Oct. 1859.  Pauline Stark Moore reported his birthday as Oct. 28, 1863. I believe it was Oct. 28, 1859 on the basis he is shown in the 1860 census. The date shown reflects my findings in the 1860 census. In the census he is listed living in Dwelling# 29 with family #29.

Notes for HATTIE PAULINE BURKETT:

The following is from notes left by Pauline:   I, Pauline, was born at Grandpa & Grandma's  "Old Home Place" about 2 miles south-east out of Browndell, in Jasper Co. Mama & Daddy was living just out of Peach Tree, Texas and she had gone to Grandma's to have me. There were two children older than me. Little Essie born Jan. 27, 1909, just out of Browndell, across a field, in one of Grandpa's rent houses. She got sick in Peach Tree. Mama took her to Grandma's. She was real sick about a month, and died in a week after they found out she had sugar diabetes. She died at Grandma's. Mama never went back to the house in Peach Tree. Daddy moved their things to Grandma and Grandpa's where they lived till they could build a house, about a mile from her parents home. It was between her parent’s home & a turpentine camp where Aunt Dellie and Uncle Frank Lowrey lived. I was about 3 or 3 1/2 years old. I remember the Turpentine Camp where I stuck a nail in my foot. Ralph & Milam Gillispie lived up on a hill from our house where I fell in a well. Charlton was born before me on July 20, 1911, just out of Browndell, behind Jim Coleman's place which was Grandpa's rent house. Berneice,  the 4th.child was born in Remlig in a saw mill house. She was 2 weeks old when we moved to Stump Town & bought a house.

She was born March 11- 1917. Alricks, the 5th. child, was born at  Stump Town just out of Remlig in our house on Sept. 29-1919. Dallas, the 6th. child, was born Aug. 1-1923 in Brookeland, Texas, our home on the hill where Daddy owned and ran the  “Brookeland Bottling Works”.

Our trip to the jersey settlers reunion

Alricks and I were up very early on Friday morning April 22, 2005. Floyd and Bobee would be coming by at 6: 00 to pick us up to begin our trip to Natchez, Mississippi to attend the Jersey Settlers Reunion. It would be their second year to attend but our first. It was to be an exciting trip, as we would be staying at Oakwood Plantation Bed and Breakfast in Kingston Mississippi. It is still a working plantation and still owned by the Sojourner family whose ancestor Hardy Sojourner, built it in 1836.

My GG-grandfather, George Dougharty was married to Elizabeth Sojourner. Hardy’s sister. She was buried on the plantation when she died. There is a large map of every county in Mississippi, hanging on the wall of the living room at Oakwood. These were individual maps surveyed and drawn by George then incorporated into one large one, so to have it hanging in the Sojourner home would indicate that George was a respected member of the Sojourner family. His marriage to one of the Sojourner women qualifies us as allied members of the Jersey Settlers.

On close inspection, Floyd discovered that the map bears this writing: Compiled chiefly from Public Surveys. By Samuel Gwin of George Dougharty 1838.

Eng. (Engraved) by John Philad.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1838 by Samuel Gwin and Geo. Dougharty, in the office of E. Penn.

Printed by S. Tiller   Colored and mounted by Mr. S. H. Spruill

This is a census of the several Counties of the State of Miss.   1837.

There is also another wall hanging bearing the signature of George Dougharty. He witnessed the deed at the purchase of the land at Oakwood.

The map barely missed being destroyed when in 1981 Virginia Sojourner Harrigan and her husband Dwight began restoration of the old home. Her mother, Dorothy “Dot” Sojourner was clearing out the upstairs and threw down what she supposed to be a rolled up piece of old wallpaper. On closer examination, she found it to be the map which was in very poor condition. Since it seemed to be an important part of history, they went to great trouble and expense to have it restored and framed. So, because of people who care, it now hangs in the living room at Oakwood.

Everything in this beautiful old home takes one into the past and I would highly recommend it above any of the modern Inns in the area.

6:00 AM Friday April 22, 2005

We are on our way, leaving Beaumont, Texas on the first leg of our trip.

8:00 AM

Stopped in Oakdale LA., for breakfast.

8:30 AM

On the road again ----on through Louisiana we go.

11:00 AM

We arrive at the Comfort Inn in Vidalia, Louisiana, where most of the Jersey Settlers will be staying through the weekend and where the festivities begin. There are several people already here, both men and women. They seem to be disappointed that more aren’t here and soon realize that attendance will not be as good this year.

They seem happy to see Floyd and Bobee are back again this year and welcome Alricks and me. The back door of the lobby leads to the river walk  so Alricks, very quickly made his way there and began filming the boats as they made their way up and down the Mississippi River, observing that the ones heading upstream were having a struggle. On the other side of the river was the Natchez Bluff. After the signing in and a get-acquainted session, we have lunch and then we drive across the Mississippi River Bridge.

1:15 PM

We arrive at the Visitors Center, listen to a presentation and see a movie about Natchez. It is the nicest center I have ever seen. From there the group will take a tour of old ante-bellum homes and other sights but we opt to skip the tour and drive on to Kingston and Oakwood, where we will be staying. It was a good decision!

2:20 PM

We drive through beautiful country with winding roads and hills. Floyd, poses the question, “Why would our ancestor leave a place as beautiful as this and move to East Texas”? We answer, “We don’t know but there must have been a reason”. We

will never know! We are nearing our destination as we turn off the main road and then onto a long driveway and see the house in the distance. Such a peaceful setting comes into view---a pond, the beautiful two story home with a long front porch with wooden rocking chairs and a dog sitting there to welcome us. Unfortunately he couldn’t bark a welcome since he was constructed from left-over plaster in the restoring of the home.

Floyd had been told the door would be unlocked so we were about to enter when Sandra Sojourner, who is now in charge of the place, drove up  to welcome us. From that moment on we felt we were with family and they treated us as such. Very soon, Dorothy “Dot” Sojourner arrived and what a time we had. Oh, the stories she could tell and tell and tell!

When we entered Oakwood, we truly stepped into the past. I could almost see the people who had once lived there so many years ago. The history is amazing, some of the stories so sad---wives dying in child-birth, leaving husbands with motherless children---maiden sisters moving in to care for them but there were also happy times. Life going on, lots of entertaining, life ever changing and the family, moving on with each change.

Tonight we will sleep in a home which speaks of our ancestor George Dougharty. Although he probably never lived here, he very well may have slept here and with out a doubt visited here many times with his family. What a rewarding experience it is for the four of us.

We were so engrossed in visiting with Dot, we were almost late getting back in to Natchez for dinner at “Cock of The Walk”. We did get there but almost didn’t get a seat.

6:15 PM

We are back at Oakwood and looking the place over, doing some reading of materials they have here and getting ready to retire for the night. Tomorrow will be a big day.

4:00 AM Saturday Morning April 23, 2005

I’m the only one awake. I can’t go back to sleep, so I get up and get dressed. Alricks wakes up too but is not ready to get up so he stays in bed and I go down to the living room. I soon hear movement upstairs and he comes down and brews coffee. It really smells good and it must have awakened Floyd so he comes down and we have coffee together. Bobee is still in bed. We look at more booklets and a rough draft of another book which Dot has brought over. She is still in the process of writing the book and after one more proof, it will be published. Alricks and Floyd read that. My turn would come later. We can hardly wait until it is published and have orders in for them.

At 8:00, Sandra is coming over from where she and her husband, Dot’s son live, across the pond. She will cook breakfast for us. When she comes, we have a delicious breakfast and Dot comes over from her house and has breakfast with us. We eat at the original dining table which has been in the house from the beginning. It is one of three that had been there.

After breakfast we visit and explore---so much to see and such a short time to see it all!

We will soon be off to Natchez again, this time to the Natchez Library where there will be a program and business meeting then time to research. We had a little trouble finding the library and also the place we wanted to get lunch but we made it on time. The program was enjoyable but Alricks and I rested while Floyd and Bobee looked at a few things and did a bit of copying.

After leaving the library, we drove back toward Kingston but decided to take a detour and try to find where Ella Young lived. We had not yet seen her at any of the meetings so we wanted to invite her and her husband Calvin to come by and visit us at Oakwood on their way in to Natchez to the main Saturday night event back at the Comfort Inn. They did and we had a nice visit, leaving early to visit a friend in the hospital

5:00 PM

We leave Oakwood and go back in to Natchez and the Comfort Inn. This will be the end of the Jersey Settlers functions in Natchez. We register and go to our tables. Floyd, Bobee, Alricks and I are seated at the table with Ella, Calvin and Ruth Latham. Ruth and I were able to visit and I found her to be a very interesting “Lady”. She authored one of the three “Jersey Settlers Books”.

I was acknowledged as a first time attendant and also had a winning number for one of the door prizes.

9:00.PM

We are back at Oakwood---this is our last night. When we arise in the morning, we will be dressing to attend the Sunday morning service at the original Kingston Methodist Church.

Sunday Morning April 24, 2005

We are up early, doing some last time exploring---Sandra comes over and cooks breakfast. Dot also comes over for a last time visit and she relates stories as Floyd videos her. She says she may come over to the church after she attends her own church service.

8:30 AM

We are on our way to the church to attend the morning service. When we go inside there are very few people there, perhaps ten to fifteen, older men and women and a young minister. The service was short. By the time it was about over, a few more people begin to arrive and the scheduled business meeting begins. Alricks and I are tired and I am cold so we decide to go to the van and take a nap. We were refreshed for the lunch which they served after the meeting. I had wondered who would be bringing the food but I need not have wondered. Cars begin arriving one after the other and soon the place is filled with cars and people and the tables in the fellowship hall are filled with food.

As soon as lunch is over we know we should get on our way, we have a long drive before us. As we come out of the fellowship hall we see Dot. At Oakwood, we had discussed that one thing missing there was a piano, especially since Dot plays the piano well. It was suggested that we go back into the church so I could sing and she accompany me on the piano. We did and she said she wouldn’t have missed that for anything. We then leave, and head for home, but decide to detour by way of Enterprise, Louisiana, where Floyd had recently learned some of his and Alricks’ Zeigler relatives had lived so many years ago. It is known that they had a stage coach station there by the river. We think we now have a contact there who has written three books about the early days in that area and hopefully she will know something about the Zeigler family.

When we get back to the main route, we plan to be home before dark---at about 7:00 PM we pull into our driveway, unload, and Floyd and Bobee head for home.

It was a wonderful three day “whirlwind trip” which will forever live in our memory! Will we go again next year----who knows? Dot called and says if we do, she and I will practice and will sing for the “Jersey Settlers”.

BRIEF HISTORY OF OAKWOOD

This history of Oakwood is the history of the Sojourner family. They were French Huguenots, arriving in America during the 1750’s. Hardy Sojourner (portrait above the mantle) came from South Carolina to the Mississippi Territory with that great influx after the United States wrested West Florida from Spain, around the turn of the century, circa 1798. His first property was 173-1/2 acres of land bought from Richard and Ester King in 1814 (see original deed hanging at the foot of the stairs).

Hardy’s first house at Oakwood was a four room log cabin near the creek. It stood

until some time in the 1950’s. It was a comfortable house with a front gallery and one chimney.

In 1824 bought more land and finally, at age 48 was married to Missouri Thomas, a young lady from adjoining Cedar Grove Plantation. She was twenty years old and Hardy, born in 1777, was forty eight.

In the early 30’s they began construction of Oakwood, finishing it in 1836. The house was exactly as you see it today except for the recessed back gallery and a change in the stairway, since there was no kitchen or bathroom inside the house in 1836, the present downstairs kitchen and bath, at that time were bedrooms. The garret rooms upstairs, under the slope of the roof, are sometimes called chamber rooms. This was where the children and mammy slept. The last three of Missouri’s children were born in the present house.

Hardy and Missouri had ten children, three sons and seven daughters before he died in 1845. The three sons lived to adulthood, one dying at the age of 24. The other two fought in the Civil War. One was wounded but both returned to help their Mother through the reconstruction years. The post war years were hard and Missouri must have leaned heavily on her two remaining sons, William and Ablosum.

On February 25, 1869, Absolum married his cousin Laura Josephine Boyd from Magnolia hill. They became the Master and Mistress of Oakwood although his mother, Missouri continued to live with them until her death in 1873. In June 1874, Laura Jo died in child-birth with her fifth child. The child also died at five months of age leaving the two brothers and three sisters. Absolum’s sister, Sarah Smith and Laura Jo’s sister, Sarah Bowman, both widowed, came to help rear the four motherless children.

In 1885, another of Absolum’s sisters, Eliza Jane, who resided in Middletown, New York, lost her husband in death and having no children, she also came home to Oakwood to live out her days with her brother’s family. She shipped a railroad car filled with household furnishings, including a piano, a set of gold band China, etc. and for a time there was two of everything. Because of crowded conditions, Eliza Jane Sojourner Baird began immediately to add on and modernize. She extended the front porch and wrapped it around the sides of the large front rooms. Te extended porch was surrounded with fancy gingerbread fretwood(fretwork), a portion of which has been used on the deck, in the 1986 restoration. At the same time she added two large rooms and a hall at the back of the house and returned the back gallery. Into the long hall she brought a long heavy Victorian stairway, the spindles, rails and steps of which are incorporated into the present stairway.  The house took on the look of the 1900’s. (See 1903 photo at top of stairway)

Only one of Absolum’s children married. Kate Aubrey Baily of Sherriffs Retreat Plantation became the bride of Albert Boyd Sojourner in 1907. Where did the live?

At Oakwood, with, Absolum, they occupied the upstairs and bore five sons. Kate died in child-birth with the fifth son and once again the unmarried sisters, this time Albert’s cared for the motherless children. Absolum continued to live at Oakwood until his death in 1922, at the ripe old age of 89. (See Photo at top of stairway, in porch rocker). Albert and his sisters resided at Oakwood until their deaths. Alice, the last, died in 1958, leaving her youngest nephew Lawrence.

For the first time in it’s history, Oakwood had only one resident and in the late 60’s Lawrence gave up his lonely residence. The hard times of the 1930’s and 40’s had taken their toll on this once gracious home. It fell into disrepair, was cold, inconvenient and uncomfortable for one person. Lawrence moved into a mobile home across the road and Oakwood was deserted.

Albert’s third son, Boyd and his wife Dot, in 1950 and reconstructed their home across the pond. Boyd maintained Oakwood in the 1960’s but finally gave it up as he was unable to get his brothers to agree on who should retain ownership.

For twenty years Oakwood was literally untouched. It was Boyd’s daughter, Virginia, the oldest daughter of her generation who grieved most over the ghostly state of Oakwood’s condition. In 1981, she asked for it’s ghostly remains. Three shares were given her and two she purchased in August of 1981. She started her restoration project and life-long dream in January 1982 (see restoration album on card table). The 1886 additions would be removed and the project would follow the original plan.

Five years later and just in time for the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of Oakwood, the project was completed.----- In October 1986, on Dot Sojourner’s birthday, the family gathered to celebrate and dedicate the home. Albert’s sons Hardy, Boyd and Lawrence were present. A short memorial was held for their deceased brothers Carol and William, who both died during the year of Oakwood’s completion.

Throughout the history, Oakwood has remained the heartbeat of its community. In each generation the family roster included educators, legislators, county officials, war heroes, farmers and carpenters. It has always been the hub of community activity and still is, probably because of its friendly family and its close proximity to Kingston School and Community Center. It boasts the first telephone outside the city of Natchez. Its front porch has staged many weddings due to its judges. It was the place where the rural mail carrier stopped to have lunch and water his horse, travelers stayed overnight and school teachers boarded through the winter. The poor, the lonely, the orphaned, the widowed and the troubled always found refuge at Oakwood. The cook never knew how many to prepare for. In, the hall stood a hall tree, filled with coats. The only fare for a meal at this self sufficient plantation was the proper dress---a coat. It could be too big, too small, faded and maybe dirty but traditions were strong, Southern standards were high, you were required to wear a jacket to sit at Oakwood’s proud table, the same table that graces its present dining room. Oakwood, is known for its fun, food, laughter, games and music. It has always been a place where friends like to be, a tradition that still holds true.

Today the Sojourner family is still following its rich heritage and traditions. They are a people maintaining their place in history; people of strength, character, principles, conviction and purpose. They still have their teachers, political leaders, farmers and business men, all true Southerners and down home Americans.
