THE NOAH BOYETT STORY

If the Noah Boyett story is to be told, now is the time! The
oldest living generation of his direct line, is my generation and
there are very few of us left. I am probably one of four or five,
I personally know, who are over eighty and neither of them is
in a position to tell the story. One of those is a descendant of
Texas Ann “Texanna” Boyett Dougharty and the others are,
as I am, a descendant of John Wesley Boyett.

It was in the early sixties when I first began researching the Boyett family. My nephew, Earl J. Boyett, Jr., had gotten a few things from the Jasper Co., Courthouse and passed them on to me. It was enough to create an interest in learning more about the family into which I had been born. Oh, how I wish I had had that interest
when I was growing up and could have pressed my parents, aunts and uncles for more information and family stories, of which, I’m sure there would have been many. I know my aunt Leona Elizabeth “Lizzie” Boyett Meadours could have given me enough information to write a book.

Our line is from Noah Boyett and Susan Putnell. Noah was born in Alabama, on November 18, 1830, to Ethel Dread Boyett and Sara Ann Saucer Boyett. In researching the Boyett family, we have found numerous spellings of both the Boyett and Ethel Dread names. On censuses, we’ve found Boyt, Boyet, Boyte Boyett and Boyette. Ethel Dread has appeared on censuses as Ethel Dread, Edward and as Ed. Blame whomever you wish they have always been the same person.
Ethel Dread was married to Sara Ann Saucer on September 25, 1821. He was born August 10, 1800 in Georgia and Sara Ann was born October 26, 1806.
It stands to reason, the Boyetts had traveled across the country from the East Coast, we think the Carolinas, and finally made it to North Louisiana and on into Southern Arkansas. There, they decided to put down roots and establish homes. The children born to Ethel Dread and Sara Ann Boyett were:
William C. Boyett Born: October 1, 1822
Stephen Boyett Born: January 18, 1825
John R. Boyett Born: December 5, 1828
Noah Boyett Born: November 18, 1830
Mary Ann Boyett Born: October 4, 1833
Sara Ann Boyett Born: January 22, 1836

Sara Ann died on February 12, 1840, leaving him with six children. On January 9, 1842, Ethel Dread was married to Nancy Porter in Arkansas. To this union was born five more children:
Samuel M. Boyett Born: November 28, 1842
Ethel Dread Boyett Jr. Born: May 9, 1845
Ursela Ann Boyett Born: October 24, 1846
James Henderson Boyett Born: April 22, 1848
Lafayette Benjamin Boyett Born: October 14, 1848
Ethel Dread had fathered eleven children by two wives. Nancy was born on December 13, 1812 and died on November 25, 1855.
Then Ethel Dread married his third wife, Elizabeth Jane Russell and to them was born four more children:
Charlotte Ann Boyett Born: July 12, 1859
Felix Boyett Born; March 17, 1861: Died: September 6, 1863
William Russell Boyett Born: April 11, 1863
Eliza Ann Boyett Born: December 1, 1865: Died; 1908
So Ethel Dread now has fifteen children. Elizabeth was born May 12, 1822 and died on December 2, 1908, in Arkansas. She is buried in the same cemetery where
Ethel Dread is buried but not beside him. We are thinking it is possible that Ethel Dread and Elizabeth may have been divorced. We recently learned that in the 1880 census in Columbia Co., Arkansas, this household was listed, so I think we can see that Ethel Dread had married a fourth wife. In the home, were two of his children by Elizabeth and also Rebecca Russell who apparently had some connection to Elizabeth Jane Russell. It is a puzzle which we may never have the answer to. I hope it is not one of those skeletons in the closet. Those, we don’t like to find, however many of them are found when we get into research. The people have all been dead for many years. May they all rest in peace!

So, he apparently, had a fourth wife who we had not known about until recently.

We now come back to Noah Boyett, the line we are following. He was born in Alabama, as his family made their way from the Carolinas to Arkansas. Noah and Susan Putnell were married in Union County Arkansas on September 27, 1851. A record I had copied said they were married by Justice of the Peace James Grumbles. Floyd and Bobee will soon have a document which will verify the marriage. At the time of their marriage, Noah was 21 years of age and Susan was 15, not an unusually young age for girls to marry in those times.
We don’t know how soon after their marriage, they decided to move on southward to Texas but since their first child was born in Jasper Co., Texas, they must not have remained in Arkansas very long.

We don’t have court records showing when they first purchased land in Jasper Co. so we have no proof that they began life on the land which became the location of the Noah Boyett Homestead in Erin, south of the town of Jasper. We feel they had some acreage there and added more than a hundred acres more in 1880, when they bought land from Kiziah Kelley. We do have copies of that legal transaction. After they came to Texas, their first child was born, a son, they named William Jasper, I assume, he was named for the town of Jasper. These were the children born to Noah and Susan Boyett:
William Jasper Boyett Born: December 15, 1853
John Wesley Boyett Born: February 12, 1856
Mary Francis Boyett Born: February 6, 1858
Julia Ann Boyett Born: November 20, 1860
Texas Ann “Texanna” Boyett Born: October 14, 1864
Thomas Jefferson Boyett Born: September 13, 1868
Henry Jackson Boyett Born:
James Noah Boyett Born June 13, 1874
Sarah Ann Boyett Born;
Joseph Ethel Boyett Born:

We feel sure that it was on the Boyett Homestead that my grandfather and Floyd’s great-grandfather was born on February 12, 1856. We are direct descendants of John Wesley Boyett and Henrietta Jones. They were married October 24, 1877 in Jasper Co., Texas. She was born July 13, 1861 and died November 21, 1896 in Newton Co., Texas. They are both buried in the Newton City Cemetery in Newton, Texas.
I wish we knew when the Noah Boyett Homestead was built but we’ve apparently waited to long and there is no one who can give us that bit of information. We are sure though that Noah and Susan reared their family there on the old home place. When Alricks, Gwen Boyett White and I visited Lee and Othalia McLemore in the sixties,he did tell us that my great-grandfather Noah built the home, himself, even hand-tooled the inside trim, decorating it with a unique design which I, with the description Mr. McLemore gave me, drew, along with the house plans. Of course, I was given no dimensions. If I had thought to ask he might have been able to oblige me. He, at first seemed not too happy that we were there.

I was not surprised to learn that Noah was an experienced carpenter. I had learned when I was a child that good carpenters ran in the Boyett family. My mother was the proud owner of a folding ironing board and there were not many of those in those long ago years. She told me her father-in-law, John Wesley Boyett, had built each of his three daughters-in-law one of the ironing boards, I think they may have been wedding gifts to them. I never learned if he had done the same for his daughters. I enjoyed using the ironing board from the time I was old enough to iron until I married and left home.

Both my brothers, Eugene and Earl, inherited the tendency to carpentry skills. As early as the age of twelve or thirteen, Earl was building his own toys and other small items so one of our neighbors wanted Santa to bring her little daughter an old time kitchen cabinet for Christmas. There was no such thing for sale so she asked Earl to build one. He did and it was very good. I’m sure the child thought Santa had indeed, brought it, right from his own workshop. That cabinet is still in existence sixty four years later. Of course it is in need of repairs.
In writing these family stories, one can easily get sidetracked so back to the main story.

The 1870 Jasper Co., census listed the household as that of Noah Boyett Boyett age 39 and Susan Boyett age 33 with children:
William J. Boyett 16
John W. Boyett 14
Mary F. Boyett 12
Julia A. Boyett 9
Texas Ann Boyett 6
Thomas J. Boyett 2
These are other children born to Noah and Susan.
Henry Jackson Boyett Born:
September 19, 1870
Joseph Ethel Boyett Born: June 13, 1874
James Noah Boyett Born: June 13, 1874
Sarah Ann “Sallie” Boyett Born: February 17, 1877

We have no idea when Noah made the decision to establish the Noah Boyett Cemetery. It could have been at the time the first of the little boys died. I would like to think that he and Susan discussed how nice it would be to have the child buried nearby so they could visit the grave site frequently. Whatever their reason, a cemetery was located just a few yards north of their home. Then another little grave was added when another son passed away. We aren’t sure how many more relatives or friends were buried there but we’ve been told there were several more, some had markers, some did not. I’ve passed the old homestead many time, unfortunately it has been since the old place was demolished and a new home standing in its place.

It was always such a peaceful and serene scene and left me with a strange feeling of nostalgia that I was unable to understand. It was as if I was overwhelmed with a feeling of homesickness. At the time, I didn’t know what that location had meant to my ancestors. After learning whose home it had been, I then understood, the feelings I’d had when passing the place.

The cemetery was on a small hillside and I can imagine seeing Susan and perhaps Noah beside her, standing beside the little graves of their boys. I suspect they shed tears as they remembered the little ones they had loved and cared for in the short time they had been privileged to have them. I had been told by relatives that in establishing the cemetery, Noah hoped all his children and their families would be buried there but that did not happen. In the end, Susan, Noah and daughter Sarah Ann “Sallie” Boyett Bevil were the only other immediate family members we can be sure were laid to rest there, although there may have been some we didn’t know about.

Susan was born on November 10, 1837 and died on February 16, 1889 at the age of 52 years. Noah was born November 18, 1830 and died on May 30, 1897 at the age of 67 years, out living his wife by 8 years. At the time of Susan’s death their youngest daughter Sallie was just 12 years of age.

The story was related to me that at the time of Susan’s death, the daughter Julia and her husband John Morgan and their children moved in with Noah to help rear Sallie and of course to help run the home. I wasn’t told how long the arrangement lasted but it evidently was not a permanent one. It appears that for some reason, they moved out, and were replaced by the younger son, James Noah and his wife Julia Ann Cooper. It is my understanding that James Noah and Julia were married at the very young ages of approximately 17 and 14. Perhaps if that were the case the young couple would benefit from living in Noah’s home.

We know the Boyett Cemetery did not work out as planned. When Susan died she was buried near her little sons and we know, for a fact, a nice, tall marker was placed at her grave. Then when Noah died an identical marker was placed at his grave. Several relatives and friends have attested to the fact and described the monuments to us so we have no doubt that they were there.

I don’t know whether Noah and Susan had wills before her death but they probably didn’t, at least we have no copies of any. Apparently, he didn’t have a will, either, until shortly before his death. He must have known that his death was eminent so he began making plans for the disposal of his property. My parents had never discussed any of these types of legal matters with me. It was best to let sleeping dogs lie. I would hope it was an amiable business transaction but my intuition tells me everyone involved was not in total agreement nor too happy about the way it was handled. In the end, Grand-father Noah left everything he owned to his younger son, James Noah. The copies of the legal papers we have, plainly state, in a will written on May 15, 1897:

First, it is my will that all of my just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as convenient after my death.

Second, it is my will that the said J. N. Boyett, my son, have all my interest in the homestead of one hundred and four acres of land, part of the N. Kelley and part of the A. C. Parmer , said interest to include all the improvements, such as houses, barns etc. After checking birth and death dates, I now know that James Noah was 23 years old when his father willed him all his property and that he was 39 years old when he died so he owned the place about 16 years, depending on whether he sold it or his wife sold it after his death.

I hereby appoint my brother L. B. Boyett executor of this my last will and it is further my will that no action be taken in the probate court except proof of this will, and filing an inventory of this the property, and no bond be required of my executor. In the testimony of all which I sign my name hereto in the presence of M. Morgan and William Turner.

So this will was written on May 15, 1897 and fifteen days later, on May 30, 1897, Grand-father Noah Boyett, passed from this earth and was buried beside his beloved wife, Susan, there beside their “Old Boyett Homestead” in Erin, Jasper Co., Texas, where they had lived, loved and reared their large family. They would never know that only one more of their children would be buried there beside them in the quiet of the beautiful countryside they loved so much---the place where they had experienced happy time, times of sorrow, times of loneliness and all the spectrum of emotions, which come to a married couple as they struggle through a lifetime of rearing a family. This pioneering couple also experienced the dreaded separation couples have feared down through the ages—that of war time. Noah was called away to serve in the Civil War. He had to leave his wife and children but fortunately, lived to return home to them. Many others, from that area of Jasper Co., were not as fortunate. They were buried in far away places, never to return to their families.

These are the names of some of the men who answered the call and who served in the Thirteenth Texas Cavalry, the list having been taken from an issue of The Jasper County Newsboy of 1961. These were the ones connected with our family in some way. Privates: Noah Boyett, William Morgan, Reuben Morgan, John Zeagler and William Zeagler. James Monroe Jeffers also went from Jasper Co., but served in the Texas Infantry. William Morgan and James Monroe Jeffers never made it home, this we know because they were members of our family as was Noah Boyett.

Noah had been a wagon maker by trade and it seems my Aunt Lizzie Boyett Meadours Pointed out the remains of a building across the road from the old home place and said it had been her grand-father Noah’s Wagon and blacksmith shop. I have a copy of the 1880 Jasper Co., census which listed Noah as wagon maker. When he enlisted in the army he was assigned to the Government Workshop in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he built and repaired equipment used by the Cavalry, during the Civil War. He was still in the Workshop at the time of his last muster roll in the year1865. This is his Military Record:
Name and Rank: Boyett, Noah, Pvt.
Comm. Off: Seale, E. T. Capt.
Organ: Co. F., 13th Regt., TC. Col. Jno.
Col. Jno. H. Burnett, Condg. CSA
At some time, so many men were lost from Co. F and Co.G the two were combined and most of noah’s record was with C. G.
Enlist: Mar. 1-1862 in Jasper Co., Texas

Life was difficult for the families the men had left behind and it became necessary for the County officials to formulate a plan to check on them and see that they had food and other necessities. They sometime found them without food and so would see that they were taken care of. These were the minutes of the Jasper Co., Commissioners Court, September 1863.

Ordered by the Court, that the cards allotted to the wives and widows of the soldiers, be furnished at $11.00 and distributed to the following ladies: Noah Boyett and James Jeffries (Jeffers). We have also seen copies of records where they had delivered so many pounds of beef and certain amounts of meal. I can only imagine how those mothers felt when they knew they would have food to cook for their families.

Since we can only assume that the young Noah Boyett family lived on the homestead until he died in 1913, we don’t actually know when the McLemore family purchased it, but we feel sure the first McLemore owners were John and Sara Ann Boyett McLemore. She was Noah Boyetts youngest whole sister so the place was still partly in the Boyett family and so it happened that the McLemores began to bury their dead in the Boyett cemetery but renamed it the McLemore Cemetery. One of the McLemore relatives told us it had always been the McLemore cemetery but of course we know that is not the case.
We know, for a fact, that one more Boyett was buried in the cemetery. I don’t know the date of the last funeral but have a first person account of the funeral. My Aunt Lula Love Boyett, wife of Noah Jackson Boyett told me this story. On a cold winter day the youngest daughter of Noah and Susan was laid to rest in the Boyett Cemetery. She was Sarah Ann “Sallie” Bevil. Aunt Lula said by the time the graveside service had concluded they were about frozen so the McLemore family invited them in to get warm before they left to return to their homes.
I seem to recall Aunt Lula saying the McLemores also served them refreshments—I would imagine they were served hot coffee and probably a desert.

Several generations of the family lived in the home before it was finally replaced with a new, more modern home. At the time I went there to visit, Lee and Othalia McLemore were living there. Alricks and I, accompanied by Gwen Boyett White had decided to stop by and try to learn more about the home and especially about the cemetery which was no longer there. We had been told that he had destroyed it years before. At that time it was being used as a corn field. We were a little nervous about how we might be received and at first it was a bit awkward and he became somewhat agitated when we mentioned the cemetery but he warmed up to us and let us take some documents in to Jasper to have copied. He then let me borrow pictures of the original home to bring to Beaumont to have printed and enlarged. I later returned the originals, along with enlargements and he was thrilled. He really didn’t want to admit that he had removed monuments from the cemetery but we knew he had. Although we got no satisfaction as far as the cemetery was concerned, we considered the visit a success in that we got other important items

Having him tell about the old home and giving me the description of it was more than worth the effort. He did admit he had moved the McLemore monuments to the Zion Hill Cemetery on the Jasper-Kirbyville Highway but wouldn’t say he had removed the Boyett ones. It was well known by anyone in that area that he had.

About three years ago, we were told we needed to visit with Alfred Morgan who lives just down the road from the old Boyett place. Alfred is a distant relative of ours on our Morgan side. We made an appointment and did some cemetery hopping in the area while we waited for the Morgans were having a birthday party for Alfred’s wife Julia. We went well armed—video camera notebooks, the works.
Although Alfred and Julia must have been tired after the days activities, they very kindly welcomed us into their home and we found them to be as nice an old couple as we could ever hope to meet. We knew immediately, they were sincerely interested in our cause. Mr. Morgan told us that as soon as he discovered what Lee McLemore was doing, he went up to their place to try to dissuade him from destroying the cemetery. In fact, he asked the question, “you, aren’t really going to do this, are you”? His reply was “well I guess I am, it’s on my property, I can do anything I want to”. And so he did, dismantle the monuments, plow up the ground and turn it into a pea-patch. Later the monuments were removed and thrown into a ravine at the back of the property and supposedly covered over with dirt. Mr. Morgan said he searched and searched but was never able to find them. Mr. Morgan, laughingly, told us he had told many people, the land must have been cursed because the pea-patch, Mr. McLemore turned it into would never grow peas. Could it be possible that because the Noah Boyett Cemetery had been desecrated, the land actually had been cursed? However, when we went there years later, corn was growing in the field.

In the last few years, I was successful in influencing my nephew, Floyd Willis Boyett and his wife Bobee to join me in the research of the Boyett and other lines of our ancestry. We certainly have a common interest in every line, since Floyds Dad was my brother and his Mother was the sister of my husband, Alricks Burkett. Floyd and Bobee are now the “history detectives” of the family, while I try to fill them in on the past and write as many stories as I can about “old times”.
It is remarkable---the information they have ferreted out. Of course, I had no computer when I began years ago and didn’t have until about three and a half years ago. What would we do without computers now.

Floyd has also become a member of “The Sons Of The Confederacy and is trying to get monuments on the graves of all relatives who served in the Civil War.Noah Boyett is one of those men and Floyd has a monument at his home, waiting to be installed somewhere, sometime. Where that place will be is still unknown to us. There are, reportedly, some attorneys in the descendants of the Boyett family. If any of you attorneys see this document and feel you can assist us, we can be reached at these addresses:

This document has been written with no intent of malice toward any person whose name was mentioned in the story. All these people are, or were relatives of mine. I can remember my Dad, George Peavy Boyett, speaking of his McLemore relatives as if they were revered kin. The purpose of my writing this story is to leave as true an account, of what happened, as is possible so my descendants and others who come after me will not have to second guess about the past or perhaps just not be concerned, at all, about what happened. My hope is that this document will clear up any misconceptions about what happened to the Noah Boyett Cemetery and perhaps present a clearer picture of the Boyett genealogy.

35. Noah6 Boyett (Ethel Dread5, Edward4, James3 Boyet, Edward2, Thomas1 Boyte) was born November

18, 1830 in Alabama, and died May 30, 1897 in Erin, Jasper Co. , Texas. He married Susan Putnell September

27, 1851, daughter of Peter Putnell and Unknown. She was born November 10, 1837, and died February 16,

1889 in Erin, Jasper Co. , Texas.

Notes for Noah Boyett:

Family Search International Genealogical Index v4.o2, Film Number 2034548 has the Marriage date for Noah

Boyett and Susan Putnell as September 30, 1951.

Noah and Susan built a homestead in the Erin Community, south of Jasper, Texas. He established a cemetery

adjacent to their home and called it "The Noah Boyett Cemetery". It was his wish that all his family would some

day be buried there. He and Susan were laid to rest there, as were others, including their youngest daughter, Sarah

Ann "Sallie" Boyett Bevil, wife of John Bevil. My Aunt Lula Love Boyett, wife of Noah Jackson "Noan" Boyett,

told me the story of the funeral for Aunt Sallie. It was in the winter and bitterly cold so after the funeral, the

McLemore family who had bought the home, invited the Boyett and Bevil families into their home to get warm

before they began their homeward journey. The McLemores were relatives of the Boyetts, their female ancestor

having been Sara Ann Boyett, the sister of Noah.

Who would think that years later, Lee McLemore would remove the grave markers from the Boyett Cemetery,

have those of his family relocated to the Zion Hill Cemetery and deposit the Boyett markers in a gully somewhere

behind the property, where they would be covered over and never located! The cemetery would become a pea

patch and later, a corn field. Our Morgan cousin told us that peas would never grow in the location of the

cemetery and he had told people he thought it had been cursed.

Many years later, my husband and I, along with Gwen Boyett White visited with Lee and his wife Othalia.

When we asked about the cemetery, he denied that there were monuments but we knew they had been there

because my Aunt Elizabeth "Lizzie' Boyett Meadours and Aunt Lula had told me they were. In recent years.

several members of our family, including Floyd and Bobee Boyettt, Robert Boyett, Alricks and I visited with one

of our Morgan relatives who lived just down the road from the old Boyett home and he told us that he had plead

with Lee, not to destroy the cemetery but he would not heed his pleas. How sad that such a terrible thing can and

does happen but I'm sure it has happened to many other families. We hope to place a monument somwhere to

honor our Civil War ancestor. We owe him that much! Ruby Boyett Burkett September 1, 2003 It is

now January 2005 and the monument is yet to be installed but it will be at some future date as it now sits in Floyd

Boyetts garage.

George Peavy Boyett was the fourth child of John Wesley Boyett and Henrietta Jones. He was born in Newton

County and remained there for most of his life. At some point in his life, his brother Johnny who lived in

Elizabeth, Louisiana helped him to get a job there. After a short time Georged told his brother, "well, I'm going

back to Texas---the sun don't rise and set in Louisiana". Annette, one of Johnny's daughters, related this story to

me shortly before she died---I'm so glad she did. George was married to Arcadia Imelda Dougharty on July 7,

1912, in Newton County Texas and they were the parents of five childrenthe last, a daughter was stillborn.

Notes for Arcadia Imelda Dougharty:

Arcadia Imelda Dougharty was the eldest child of George Bowman Dougharty and Maud Lewis. She was born

in Newton County, Texas and remained there all her life. Imelda was named for her dad's only sister Arcadia

"Kate" Dougharty who married Randall Herrin. Imelda was a wonderful wife and mother whose devotion was to

God, husband and children. Just recently, in rereading letters she had written to a pen-pal in Kentucky, I found

these words, "the happiest days of my life was when my children were around my feet". Those words were

penned after the four of us we were married and in homes of our own. What a wonderful lady my mother was--

-

and so I wrote this acrostic to honor her.

Always, Mother, I will hold you dear.

Remembering the "good deeds" you did when you were here.

Could never forget your loving care,

And your many sacrifices, year after year.

Did you ever neglect us.....No, no, no..

.

Indeed, we came first, it had to be so.

And you never complained...no not one word.

In the short fifty two years you lived here on earth,

Many times you gave and gave even in times of dearth.

Everyone, it seemed, depended on you.

10

Little did they realize, you needed help too..

.

Down through the years, you struggled along,

And no one noticed you were carrying a load.

But God up above saw you needed a rest,

Only He could know what for you would be best.

Your faithfulness to Him, didn't go unnoticed.

Everyting you did, He daily recorded,

Then when the proper time came,

Took you home to Heaven to be rewarded.

 All my love,

Your eldest daughter, Ruby Ray

Notes for Hattie Pauline Burkett:

Hattie Pauline Burkett was the third child of Simon Henry Burkett and Martha Devillie Jeffers Burkett. She was

born at the home of her Jeffers Grandparents--- the home we refer to as "the old place" beside Mill Creek at

Browndell.

At the age of twenty one, on July 25, 1934 she was married to Eugene Peavy Boyett in Bon wier, Texas. They

became the parents of a little daughter Barbara Jean on September 23, 1938. Barbara was a beautiful and very

special child, the only grandchild of the Boyett Grandparents. She was the "pride and joy" of the Burkett and

Boyett families but was especially doted on by her aunt, Ruby Ray Boyett.

Only God knows why but Barbara's life was very short. She was burned in a tragic accident at the home of her

Burkett Grandparents and died on the day she would have been nineteen months old.

This is an acrostic poem I wrote, in remembrance of our "Little Angel"

.

 Barbara Our Little Princess

Barbara our darling, we cherished you so,

All our love, on you we bestowed.

Rosy cheeked cherub with eyes all aglow,

Boyett and Burkett granddaughter we all doted on.

Always happy, you were a joy to me. I,

18

Ruby, your aunt, who was teaching you to sing.

And never dreaming what the future would bring.

Just when we felt everything was fine,

Even then, God knew there was limited time.

And that all the family would soon be in grief,

Nothing to do but weep and cry....for you as the lonely days passed by.

Beautiful darling, you so soon would be gone,

Only memories of you, would linger on.

Your Mommy and Daddy, were left alone.

Ever so lonely, in an empty home.

Then two little boys came to fill that space, but

That didn't mean they could take your place

John Wesley Boyett

And

Henrietta jones Boyett

John Wesley Boyett and Henrietta Jones were married October 24, 1877, in Jasper County Texas. He was 21 years of age and she was 16. He had been born in Erin, Jasper Co., Texas on February 12, 1856 while Henrietta had been born in Decatur Co., Georgia on July 13, 1861. She, her brothers and sisters had come from Georgia to Texas with their mother Elizabeth Morgan Jones after their father Sion Jones had died soon after returning home from the Civil War. It is unknown where John and Henrietta lived when they were first married but is a known fact that they lived in Bon Wier and that their home was located on the site which later became the property of Harrison Davis and his wife Ethel Hughes. Their home was just north of Bon Wier, on the left side of the road going toward Newton.

When I was about eight or nine years of age, we learned that Mr. Harrison would be razing the last of the old Boyett buildings, which, I believe, to have been a portion of a log barn. My aunt Minnie Fuller drove over from Merryville and  she, my daddy, mother, brother Earl, sister Minnie Merle and I  went up to take pictures before the last remnant of the “Old Boyett Home” was gone. As young as I was, at the time, I remember it as a sad occasion which can be seen on our faces, in the one picture I still have of that day---although our expressions were also those of a family living during the depression years.

I have been told that Grandfather John Wesley was engaged in logging as many men were in those days. Mr. Harrison related a story to Ralph Ramos about John Wesley and his oldest son Noah Jackson “Noan” Boyett floating, or rafting logs down the Sabine River to Orange. The story was published in the Beaumont Enterprise on May 26, 1974. The story, which I consider an interesting part of my family history, is now on my web-site on the short stories page.

In the last year, we have visited the Bon Wier area and the small Dougharty Cemetery on the banks of Caney Creek, where my GG-grandfather George and my great-grandfather Charles Bowman Dougharty are buried, as well as other members of the Dougharty family.

Those visits have brought back memories to my husband, Alricks Burkett, whose family home was near the creek and cemetery. He has said that when his family was building their home, they pulled sinker logs from the creek to use in making shingles to roof their house. They were logs which had jammed and were left behind as they were being floated down the creek to the Sabine and thus on to Orange many years earlier. One might ask, “How, could logs be floated down a creek as small as Caney? It was done during flood stage when seasonal rains had caused the creek to overflow its banks.

Now, I can begin to put two and two together and come up with the rest of the John Boyett “log floating story”. He lived just across the road from Caney Creek so would it be too much to assume that the first leg of his journey to Orange began just across the road from his home, down Caney to the Sabine River and on to Orange? I don’t think so! The tough part of the job would be the long walk back home after the logs were delivered. Our ancestors did not have an easy life! Their work was hard and sometimes dangerous but in East Texas, logging and sawmills were the means of a livelihood and they did what they had to do. That, I know, because my dad was a logger as were his father and brothers. I will never forget seeing my dad, George Boyett come in from the woods after sawing logs all day. He always wore blue overalls and when he got off the train which brought the men in from the woods to Kirby Camp, his overalls and shirt would be white because of the salt from sweating (and I do mean sweating) all day. When the sweaty clothes had dried, there was a, noticeable, white residue which remained. I also remember times when the train would come into the camp during the day. There was a certain whistle signal to alert those living in the Camp that they were bringing someone who had been injured on the job. For the wives and children of the loggers, those were difficult times. I’m not sure whether any man was ever fatally injured. Although I was a young girl, the memories of those times will forever remain with me and I am leaving these stories so that the now, as well as future generations, will know what life was like for their ancestors. In money and worldly goods, they left very little but as we remember their lives through these stories, we realize they left us a rich heritage. What more could we ask?
